My Students

My kids are smart, but many lack the exposure to vocabulary that they need to understand and express ideas at the same level as their peers. Most of my students are reading 3-4 years below grade level and need to have specific interventions to build their skills.

I teach 90 students in three 8th grade classes in what is considered an 'economically-disadvantaged' middle school.

I have been trying to get individual vocabulary books in front of my kids for years, every year in fact. I see what ownership my students have for things that are given to them so I know these vocabulary books will be a great resource. Extra money is not something that my students and their parents/guardians regularly have, if ever. I cannot "require" my students to purchase "extra" books and materials and my school does not have the money to purchase them, even if I know this will have an incredible impact on my students' learning.

My Project

With individual vocabulary books from Wordly Wise 3000, my students will have regular exposure to new words and skills that they can practice at their own level. These books are paired with free online resources so kids can play games, practice and self-test their own vocabulary to reinforce their skills. We will have time every week where they can focus on vocabulary learning and these books will go home with students for practice and study. My students have had such pride and ownership of the books that they are given and the results are incredible. Vocabulary has always been important, but with the new Common Core tests, it has even more emphasis than ever. Too many times, I have seen smart kids get questions wrong simply because they did not know the vocabulary of the question.

Kids have fun with words and they love to study them - these Wordly Wise books are a fantastic system that is well-designed and at the right level for my students to learn.

And as big a difference that I am sure they will make, my students will simply never get these books without your help.
