My Students

My students are very eager to learn. Our current vocabulary curriculum is nonexistent. In order to make my students more successful readers, I have a plan to develop a new vocabulary system.

They are always looking forward to the next challenge I will put in front of them. We are a tight-knit school and community. Our school is K-8, so the students get to know each other fairly well by the time they get to me in 6th grade. We are like family.

My Project

In previous years, our vocabulary skills have been shown to be an issue on standardized testing. This is also affecting their reading comprehension. After reading Ron Clark's Essential 55, I have decided to create my own "Rockin' Words" dictionaries for each student. I have pulled 1,000 words students will encounter in our novels. In the vocabulary books I have selected, I will choose another 500 to help with everyday reading as well as words that will improve their writing skills. My students need a new vocabulary curriculum including centers and a game and 28 binders to hold a list of all of the vocabulary words they will come into contact with in 6th grade. Students will receive 50 words each week which they will add to their binders. We will play games (added to this listing) and have fun learning them. We will add 50 words each week, never forgetting the previous week's words.

This system will help make my students more aware of words they will encounter not just this school year, but for the remainder of their education and beyond.

Giving my students a wide base of words they are comfortable with will help them better understand what they read throughout their education. It will also help that they are learning vocabulary through games, and they will see these words over and over so it will give value to what they are doing.
