My Students

Can you imagine walking into a school for the first time in your life, where no one else speaks the same language you do? Several of my students are refugees from various countries and face this situation when they join my classroom.

My school is in an urban area.

We have a large population of students who are refugees from various places including: Nepal, Somalia, Sudan, Pakistan, Iraq, Mexico, Samoa, Bosnia and Afghanistan. These students enter my classroom with little to no English and some of them have never attended school in their lives.

My Project

These digital cameras will allow students in small groups to explore their world. They will build vocabulary by taking photographs and using those photographs to learn the meaning of the words and parts of speech by creating books. One book they will write will be a book of people such as teacher, principal, chef, etc. Another one will be a book of places: classroom, hall, library, etc. They will also demonstrate verbs such as walking, skipping, jumping and have their picture taken doing those things. The pictures will go in a verb book. This will help them learn the spoken word, and the written word. The use of the cameras will energize them and they love reading their own books. As the year progresses, we will explore adjectives. We will also use our cameras to document scientific experiments such as watching plants grow and change over time.

These cameras will be used frequently to help my students build their vocabularies.

They will be used in multiple ways and will impact nearly every subject we learn. They say "A picture is worth 1,000 words." I hope these pictures will TEACH 1,000 words or even more. Thank you for your consideration.
