Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Energetic. Attentive. Curious. Collaborative. Engaged. Loving. Leaders. My students encompass all of these traits. They are energetic and engaged and have a true love of learning. My students come from diverse backgrounds and have unique needs. Our Title I school provides services to students from incredibly low socioeconomic homes, different cultures, and a variety of learning needs. My school is located in one of the roughest areas in Houston and we stand as a beacon of love and safety for our students. Though they are from a community that is under-served and are dealing with family issues that kids shouldn't have to deal with, they come to school each day looking for something better. Hurricane Harvey caused widespread devastation across the state of Texas at the beginning of last school year and our families are still recovering. Though our campus was not damaged by the floodwaters, our district and many families have had severe financial impacts. I want to provide amazing resources to my students without causing increasing financial strain on the families or schools.

My Project

The Scholastic Pocket Dictionary and Scholastic Pocket Thesaurus will allow my students to have one-on-one vocabulary support during my writing instruction. My students are eager to become better writers and to express themselves through both written and oral language, but many of them are lacking the vocabulary they need to do so.

Our students are coming from homes where they are speaking mostly Spanish or not using a wide range of vocabulary.

Due to this, the students don't know how to use vivid words in their writing. Our students were impacted by Hurricane Harvey last year and many of them still hold trauma from that experience, in addition to trauma from their home lives. Through written expression, I believe that not only will they be able to prepare for future grades, but they will also be able to heal from past experiences and become writers who have a strong voice.
