Viva La Musica!

My students need new instruments, such as glockenspiels, guiros, shekeres, tambourines, cabasas, and triangles. There are 30 children in each class so any additional instruments would be helpful, especially new ones.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Walking into the school where I teach, one can hear many languages when the parents say good-bye to their children. Most of the children come from immigrant families. English is their second language. I teach music at the largest elementary school in a city. The children come from low, socio-economic families. Many of the parents do not speak English and cannot help their children with homework.

But the children can fluently and confidently play, sing and dance music.

In music class my students are enthusiastic, inventive and joyful. It is the only time during their school day that they get to dance, sing, act, and play instruments. It is wonderful to see little souls discovering their beauty.

The children love to learn and music is an easy way to gain knowledge and develop creativity. It is a great gift for me to teach in this school.

Note: For security purposes, the picture of the children cannot show their faces.

My Project

By using a variety of instruments, the children improve coordination, listening skills, concentration, and self confidence. My students play in groups, so they learn to work together and listen to each other. I often ask the children to name words that apply to the season. In winter, the children might say such words as snow, cold, mittens, sledding. We use these words to create rhythm patterns to play on instruments. We sing hello and good-bye in many different languages such as Spanish, Albanian, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Zulu, and Arabic. I show them a globe, so they learn geography. The children play the rhythm of these international words on instruments.

These instruments will help the children learn musical concepts such as timbre, dynamics, pitch and rhythm.

Glockenspiels provide pitch so that the children can play what they sing as well as learn intervals. Playing the glockenspiel allows children to be creative. The shekere is a fun instrument that the children can keep the tempo or shake at specific parts in a song. Children enjoy playing the triangle because of its sound. The tambourine can be shaken or tapped and children gain immediate pleasure from playing it. The cabasa is brushed against the palm of the hand. This feels good and the cabasa makes an interesting sound. Sometimes sounding like a frog, the guiro helps children explore a variety of sound. All of these instruments will be used to enhance a song, a dance or a poem.

My students need new instruments, such as glockenspiels, guiros, shekeres, tambourines, cabasas, and triangles. There are 30 children in each class so any additional instruments would be helpful. Presently, many of the school's instruments have been used for more than ten years. 800 children use these instruments every year. Right now I have two xylophones and three glockenspiels for 30 children per class.

Through music, children develop language skills, physical agility, and focus. School becomes a place where children want to be.
