Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The educator must believe in the potential power of his pupil, and he must employ all his art in seeking to bring his pupil to experience this power." -Alfred Adler

It is my team's goal, as special education professionals, to foster an environment that helps our students make connections between what they learn in school and their lives to prepare them for learning in high school and beyond.

I teach 6th through 8th grade students in an Intellectual Disability Moderate Program. It is so important for all students to tie real-life experience to school matter, but for students with disabilities, it is one of the most effective ways to engage them and help them remember what they learn in school.

Our students are impacted by the countless factors that plague urban communities where positive and wholesome experiences are hard to come by. I prepare lessons to help them make real-life connections to our content-rich alternate curriculum unit topics, health, science, and art lessons but it can be a challenge to support such diverse learners. Still, we push on because we enjoy watching their sense of accomplishment when they are successful.

My Project

Students with disabilities thrive when teachers help them access material through multi-modal learning. Visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile learning is enhanced when materials are in color. Providing visual supports in a print-rich environment is more effective when materials are provided in color.

Our alternate curriculum is full of visual supports for our students to derive meaning from every word in every sentence.

Having color copies makes a huge impact in usability of these resources. Color copies of supplemental teacher-created materials, such as matching activities, real-life picture supports for graphs and charts, and graphics to enhance hand-over-hand activities or communication devices, will support student understanding. We need a printer to help make this possible.
