My Students

I teach and learn along side visually impaired 3rd-5th moderate to severe multiple disabilities children. My students are part of the 20% of our schools population who are in special ed and or visually impaired. We are a Title I school where 80% of the students receive free or discounted meals including my classroom.

In my classroom we focus on community, collaboration, vocational skills and independence.

My students are unique. They all have bright spirits that shine and sparkle everyday. My students are differently-abled and express their talents daily in the classroom in different ways.

Some use ASL with verbal sentences. Some use alternative forms of communication such as a button with a recorded saying and others simply tell me with their words.

My students also read & write differently from each other. Some read braille and use a brailler to write. Others use large-high-contrast print with thick lines to learn their words and letters.

We are a class of critical thinkers of all abilities. We root for each other daily to see growth and change in everyone.

Our Motto(s) are: Making mistakes are proof that we are trying and everything new in school hard at first!

My Project

Literacy, Texture Discrimination, Choice Making and Independence!

These products will help my student's become more independent citizens of the 21st Century, learn to read real items in various contexts and discriminate between textures to make structured choices and develop their own opinions.

Why liquid pour indicator?

This is used to facilitate independent daily living skills at home and at school. Including but not limited to measurement of hand soap, dish soap, water, milk, like and hot liquids soup or hot chocolate.

Why texture sheets, wikki sticks, mixed bump dots?

Texture discrimination and create handmade tactile items for in and outside of the classroom. This is particularly important for distance learning as we send most of our materials home and we are running out of tactile textures to send home. They use the various textures to navigate their environment and learning concepts of time, math, social emotional learning and English Language Development.

Why Alphabet Braille Stickers?

The braille stickers help our students learn the braille alphabet and help my staff and I create adapted books and various materials to assist each student with their unique literacy journey.

Why Braille labeler and label rolls?

This will help us create unique labels for the classroom and at home use to identify all items needed to be independent in both places. This product will also help my students identify unique items to them by their name in braille; with the goal always being independence and literacy in and outside of the classroom.

Why 4 in a Row Game- Tactile?

This game will facilitate in natural play communication and social skills retention. It will also help them make structured choices.
