Help Mr. Dorn

My students make the choice to attend school in an inner city, urban high school in Missouri. On the whole, the school services students who are classified as "high poverty" including students who are recent immigrants, English language learners, supporting their families with after school jobs, or . However, this classification does not do these students the service they deserve. Despite the fact that most of my students face indescribable obstacles in their lives, they continually get up every morning to face those obstacles knowing that their education will help their lives. Needless to say, schools in urban areas have a difficult situation when it comes to funding. At our school, we have difficulty keeping our copier filled with paper and getting enough seats for our large class sizes, let alone providing teachers with tools for multimedia. In my classroom, these exceptional high school students learn physical science, biology, and earth science. While we have excellent textbooks with literally thousands of computer based videos, pictures, and presentations, we have no way of presenting these resources to the entire class. As educational research has shown, not all people learn the same. When a teacher simply states information, some students may understand. When a student reads that piece of information, some students may understand. However, when a group of student sees that information in the form of a picture or video, hears it, and reads it, the chances of all students understanding in infinitely higher. By having an LCD projector for our science classroom, we’ll be able to access all of the amazing multimedia based resources for science. This would undoubtedly change the entire way my classroom operates and how my students learn. I fully believe that every student deserves the opportunity to learn how they learn best, and by providing my students with the opportunity to access information visually, you can ensure that each student will be able to excel in a very difficult situation and enable them to change their life paths.
