Imagine going from a classroom in urban Missouri to the rain forests of Borneo to witness a diversity of life you could only have imagined before! I am a Biology teacher in a high-need comprehensive high school in Missouri. My students are beginning to explore the complexity of the living world and excelling at it. Now, I would like to better share the ongoing biological discoveries from the ecosystems and laboratories around the world that will shape my students’ futures! My students have limited supplies, difficult situations outside of school, and high enthusiasm for learning. Biology is a subject that is not only required for high school graduation, but vital for success later in life. Every day, biologists are making discoveries that will have a direct impact on life as we know it. A thorough understanding of these topics, from species loss to gene therapy, will position my students not only to be better prepared for their future college biology coursework, but also make them better informed to make the tough decisions they will face as citizens of a global community. Biology is a required course for many college majors. If my students continue to excel in Biology, they will be given an opportunity to take advanced coursework that will enable them to pass the tests necessary to receive free college credits. For students whose families struggle with the idea of sending their kids to college because of the cost, free college credits could be the tipping point for my students attending college or not. Our school has very limited computer access for students. I need an LCD projector for my classroom to better share online biological resources, virtual labs, photos, and videos. I participated in a number of field and laboratory studies during college and have a lot to share from my experience. However, talking about them is not the same as seeing them. A recent learning styles survey of my students showed that over 78% learn best through visual media. My students will be able to become a more visual part of my biology experience with an LCD projector. My hope is that this added engagement will inspire them to pursue more advanced studies in biology in their academic career or consider a job in the exploding biotechnology sector after they graduate! Your support will ensure that my students will not only learn biological topics, but also experience the incredible complexity of the living world of which they are an integral part. This would be an excellent addition to our classroom, and would provide so many opportunities to the over 130 students I see on a daily basis!
