My Students

How many students walk out of their math class thinking "I don't get it!" They feel discouraged as they grapple with x and y, finding it difficult to make sense out of them. Students need algebra to pass high school. Giving them hands-on, visual tools can break this barrier as they explore concepts.

Our school has a project-based, arts and writing infused curriculum and encourages alternative instruction and pedagogy.

We are a public school in a large metropolitan city with approximately 1200 students. We foster a sense of community at our school, dealing with students as individuals and truly creating a feeling of family. The students I teach are a mix of skill levels, from at-risk to honors. We have a broad range of socioeconomic backgrounds, and over half of our students are on our free/reduced price lunch program. We have a mix of ethnic backgrounds and cultures, and some second language learners.

My Project

I recently attended a workshop in which I learned new ways of using algebraic tiles. The tiles are a tool to help students better understand and make connections between algebra and their prior knowledge such as area models and geometry. Students who are kinesthetic, visual or tactile learners can really make a connection with the material in a way traditional instruction cannot provide. These algebraic tiles scaffold instruction to allow students of different levels to access the same material. The tiles can be used for a broad range of algebraic topics, including those in Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. My students need algebraic tiles, a great manipulative to help them visualize and understand many topics in high school algebra.

With the increasing pressure on students to pass algebra for high school graduation, it is important they are given multiple ways to access the content and internalize it.

Algebraic tiles provide one more tool for exploring algebra, making connections between different representations of the concepts, and deepening understanding of the material. It is my belief that all students can learn algebra if given the right tools. All students deserve a chance to be successful at math!
