This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am requesting materials that will support a language-rich learning environment for my Newcomer and English Learner students.

Students developing a new language benefit from visual supports for vocabulary and language structures.

I am trained in GLAD strategies which are specifically designed for English Learners to support their language acquisition. I will use the chart paper, markers, sentence strips, and pocket charts to create pictorial and narrative input charts with academic and content vocabulary, sentence patterning charts that scaffold grammar, and chants and songs that help students practice and take ownership of language. These materials will help students access grade level content by anchoring new words to pictures. Students will use the pointers, hangers, and post its to engage in team tasks where they will be responsible for using the vocabulary they've learned with the support of all the co-created visuals in the room.

Additionally, I am requesting materials to support phonics instruction for students who are learning English. Newcomers who enter the older grades need to start learning to read in English right away, but often their limited vocabulary keeps them from understanding what they've read. The foam objects for each phonics skill will help students make meaning as they learn to decode words. The whisper phones will help students practice producing sounds as they connect the sounds to letters.
