About My Students

Marcus presented this project to me earlier in the year and I am excited to finally turnkey the project on DonorsChoose.org. Marcus, among others, has shown a great deal of interest in the arts and was very motivated by the idea of developing graphic novels using mixed analog and digital technologies.

Marcus and several of his peers have expressed a great deal of interest in the arts over the past school year. During the year, I have made it a point to incorporate the arts into the technology curriculum in order to engage students and keep the curriculum grounded by working toward products that the students will find creatively fulfilling. Marcus decided that this project would allow his peers and himself to continue their artistic pursuits, while fulfilling their requirements in technology class. Marcus was encouraged by his peers to write this student-led project, so he took the lead.

Empowering students through the arts is the cornerstone of our technology curriculum as students gain meaningful opportunities to creatively engage with new digital tools and develop skills that they can carry forward in their futures while engaging with interdisciplinary content. Students will have the opportunity to collaboratively brainstorm graphic representations and layouts for the visual stories that they wish to present, which will include personal memoirs and biographies, historical accounts that are relevant to their current social studies curricula, and DIY guides that allow them to present new material to their classmates as 'experts.'

In Their Own Words

I am interested in using new graphic tablets and some other art supplies to learn video game design and create graphic novels. If we had these tablets, we would be able to build skills that we could use in high school and our careers.

I will help to be leader in this project by showing my students how to take care of the equipment, like turning it off after using it and keeping the drafting supplies in their correct places.

This project is important to our school community because we need to learn about the future of creative arts. The challenges that we are facing are the ability to think creatively and learning how to draw.
