My Students

I serve students through a special education classroom under the

categories of Autism, Specific Learning Disabled, Other Health Impaired as well as students who struggle with emotional regulation.

My students require individualized instruction and planning in order to achieve to their maximum potential. Each child's unique gifts and challenges come together to form children who have changed the way I view the world. They make me a better teacher and human.

The pandemic has challenged my students and myself in many ways. Some students require more than packets, Zoom or Google Classroom. They need the human connection. Speaking to my students and their families on the phone during the initial closure proved invaluable. We maintained a connection while apart. I think we have all learned, especially at the elementary level, nothing replaces the hands-on instruction of a teacher.

My Project

Our seasons are beautiful, full of vibrant color and texture. Recently my class was learning the different seasons and how they change. My autistic students require many visual supports to link abstract thought to concrete vocabulary. Color printing was necessary to develop the laminated cards needed to review at home, and school. In order to print these cards in color I had two choices. First option, send the link to the administration building and wait, possibly 2-3 days for the return of my project through school mail. My second option required I send my project to the my building's office. Again I could wait for the school secretary to open her email, print, and then return my project to me. She is often very busy and as I soon learned the printer was out of ink. My students also require visual schedules to assist with emotional regulation in planning their day. A printer is invaluable in making these materials vibrant, textured and visually appealing. Thank you for considering my children's needs.
