My Students

I teach 12 special needs students who are all unique and incredible in their own way. Our pre-k center is based on learning through play. In our school year we cover seven interesting units of study. During these units of study we create our dramatic play areas and add fun educational learning tasks in other centers (math, science, writing, blocks and art center). When we transform the classroom during each new unit, the look of delight on each child’s face when they see something new and interesting is truly rewarded. One of the many challenges that my students are faced with is communication. Most of my students are non-verbal which causes frustration within the environment. I use specific teaching methods such as visual pictures and communication boards, as well as added teacher support and special services. I love playing a significant role in their learning process and being able to experience their growth to overcome this challenge. Watching them develop and improve their own unique styles of communication is truly special.

My Project

Materials that I have selected will support my students in many ways. My students love puzzles but are growing tired of the same puzzles daily. I have added a variety of puzzles which will help my students in many academic subjects but most importantly to continue building on their vocabulary and for some even learning sounds of words.

Most of my students this year require visual support and modeling during center time.

“I can build plank blocks” will help students decide what they would like to build as well as provide them with what they will need to make it, visual directions. This item will also help them become more independent and make real life connections. For example, a student has picked to build a bed. Not only will they learn the word and what it looks like but also make a connection that this is something they have at home.
