My Students

Help bring my class into the 21th century with visual technology to help students SEE concepts being taught.

My class is a ICT (Integrated Co-teaching) class.

There are two teachers in the classroom in order to support students with special needs. It consists of 40% special needs children. These students range from being emotional disturbed, having a learning disability, to requiring speech and language therapy. The remaining 60% are general education students. Of the 60%, many are ELL(English Language Learners). We are an inner city school in NY with a high poverty level.

My Project

Using an LCD projector in the classroom will allow many of the special education students as well as the general education students, especially the english language learners visualize concepts that may be too abstract for them to comprehend. Using the LCD for Math lessons as well as Social studies lessons will really enhance learning. For example, I recently taught how Native Americans are believed to have traveled into North America from Asia (Siberia) into Alaska by possibly crossing a land bridge. It was difficult for students to view a flat map and understand. Luckily, I have a globe in the classroom so I walked around to show the class how close Alaska is to Russia and the continent of Asia. With the projector, I could really show students the real world by projecting it and moving it around. It really is amazing how little students know about where they are in the world. This will truly help them SEE clearly how small the world really is.

Students who are visual learners will truly be impacted by the use of the LCD. They will feel good about themselves for finally understanding concepts they could not grasp before. Their self-esteem will improve which will improve their educational outlook. Students will realize that they are just as able to learn as others; they just learn differently.
