Visual Culture and Symbols: Seeing Ourselves Graphically

My students need Speedball gel printing plates to learn how to create monotypes. These reusable 5 x 5 inch plates are a versatile size, and they clean up easily with just a baby wipe.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm a new teacher at my school this year so I'm just getting to know my students, but already I can see that they are really imaginative and perceptive kids. They are interested in new techniques and materials that they have never used before and they like to experiment to see what they can make. This is just the sort of risk-taking I want to see in art--students that aren't afraid to express themselves and want to try new things often.

These kids are interested in becoming artists and seeing what they can create with their own ideas and creativity.

Our school has limited resources, but that doesn't mean that we can't have access to new materials and techniques. These kids deserve to have high-quality art materials and opportunities to experiment so that they can continue to develop confidence in their own art making abilities.

My Project

Visual culture is everywhere--in print, on TV, in video games, music videos, and on websites. Teaching our students to think critically about the images they see in these areas makes them smarter consumers and more aware of how images in our world can affect their attitudes and perceptions. Symbols are especially important communicators, and students encounter dozens of them everyday.

Understanding symbols and how they are created involves critical thinking and is a form of visual literacy.

This project shows students different types of symbols and allows them to investigate what makes a symbol an effective communicator. They are required to design a "personal" symbol that communicates ideas about themselves and use it in three different types of art--printmaking, patterned design, and clay. They will use the Speedball gel plates to create a layered montage of prints that allow them to incorporate colors into their symbols' designs. The soft rubber brayers are for applying acrylic paint to the gel plates and can be used in other projects as well.

The gel plates used for monotype printmaking are superior to plexiglass or styrofoam plates because they are so easily cleaned, are compatible with paint we already have (instead of requiring additional printmaking ink), and they are reusable and durable. Gel printing plates are a relatively new art material and are likely something my students have never tried before.
