This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is following a blended learning model for the safety of our students and staff due to COVID-19 affecting NYC. As a Math Coach, I want to continue engaging our students through remote learning but many of our multilingual and special needs students require visual and tactual supports in order to follow along with the teacher.

Our school is a large K-5 school with a population of 1300 students and is located in Corona, New York.

The school is representative of this multicultural neighborhood with a large Latino population.

My Project

Brain research encourages expanding the ways math is taught by incorporating visual and tactile supports for students. Using math manipulatives, such as pattern blocks or pentominoes, or viewing a number line being used to solve a math problem is deeply engaging for students. When students are physically engaged in the subject matter, they make connections and develop higher levels of understanding.

Through tactual and visual learning, students build cognitive and language skills and even develop socially and emotionally.

Various sensory experiences help students develop pathways to understand the math content being delivered. In a blended learning model, students will use math manipulatives to enhance math learning while in school and participate in visual and digitally-supported lessons at home. Combining these learning modalities will strengthen learning outcomes for our students.

I am asking for a document camera and math manipulatives so our students can access the math content being delivered. Our math classrooms include both synchronous and asynchronous math activities for our scholars! The next step is providing them with the technology and tools necessary to make progress meeting the math standards.
