Visual and Hands-On Learning in Social Studies and Science!
Help me give my students supplies for making timelines in social studies (18" butcher paper and butcher paper holder/cutter) and scientific drawings during our nature hikes (spiral-bound sketchbooks).
These supplies will allow me to engage students in visual and hands-on learning in science and social studies. Visual and hands-on learning is known to increase student engagement in the learning process and retention of what they learn.
The past is an abstract concept for children, and timelines provide a wonderful visual that makes learning about history more concrete.
We’ll use 18-inch butcher paper to make timelines, which will provide students with a larger space to draw pictures and add details. The idea is to create something artful that students can feel proud of. The stencils will aid them in adding pictures to their timelines.
In science, we’ll use the sketchbooks for scientific drawings and to store data on our local ecosystems. We’ll be studying local ecology and how humans have changed the environment over time. Our fieldwork will include collecting data on native and foreign plant and animal species. Sketchbooks will provide us with the simplest, most essential tool in a field biologist's toolbox—the handy field notebook. In addition, the tracing paper will aid students with their drawings.
I'm excited to present students with these learning activities, which will engage them in deep learning while allowing them to be playful and creative.
