Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I loop for three years with 15 junior high students with disabilities ranging from learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD to mental retardation and emotional disturbance. The students in my class live in a violent neighborhood, and I work hard to make our classroom a safe and caring place to learn.

The disabilities my students have really come out during activities related to time. Some of my students have no sense of time and don't know how two minutes feels different from 15 minutes. Others have a very difficult time transitioning from one activity to the next and need ample warning of when a change is going to happen.

If we were equipped with visual and audible timers at each group and station, my students would be able to both learn how much they can do in a set amount of time and transition without frustration and anger. The Time Timers are visual and audible timers with a solid red piece that disappears as time elapses. My students would be able to see exactly how much time they have from wherever they are in our room. The student stop watches would be used for pairs of students to time each other during their reading fluency practice. I know this will promote engagement in partner work. The Time Timer CD-Rom will be loaded onto the computers so students who are using the online reading and math program will know how much more time they have before moving to the next center. Lastly, the storage bins will help keep all of our timers organized.

With help from you, my students will get a great sense of time. They will learn how much the can accomplish in a set amount of time, how to transition peacefully and practice working with a partner while reading. Thank you for helping me teach my students these valuable lessons.
