My Students

I work at an alternative high school in New York City where we strive to create a nurturing environment for non-traditional students whose needs haven't been met at other high schools. That means recognizing student strengths and talents, listening to their concerns and ideas, and providing them with a voice to promote lasting change.

Students deserve the opportunity to share their stories and turn those stories into actions that strengthen community.

After all, it is the youth who are directly impacted by our society's challenges who have the creativity and the drive to imagine solutions.

In addition to their drive and imagination, our students also have a profound understanding of their own experiences and extraordinary insight into the world around them. And their energy is the stuff that movements are made of.

My Project

My students are incredibly creative and I want to nurture that in them by taking them to two historic locations in New York City, The Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. For National Poetry Month, my students will have an opportunity to visit the place where famous poets like Amiri Baraka and Ntozake Shange once made a name for themselves on the stage. They will also explore the history of how the Nuyorican Arts Movement developed out of the migration of Puerto Ricans to New York in the latter half of the 20th Century.

Students will meet with popular Nuyorican poets who will help them to create their own pieces and perform them on stage.

Those poems will be turned into a literary magazine for the entire school community to enjoy.

On the same day, students will visit BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) where they will see a high-energy performance by some of the most up-and-coming actors, dancers, and musicians in the city. The performance is an annual event called Word. Sound. Power. which invites students from schools throughout the five boroughs to enjoy the beauty and impact of art and to engage them in a talk-back at the end of the show. With your help, this could be an event that my students will never forget. And one that will likely inspire them to work toward their most fantastic hopes and aspirations. We hope that you'll support this exciting opportunity!
