My Project

In this unit, McCall 6th graders will research how their Philadelphia neighborhoods were affected by the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and considering how challenges spark innovations. To support this, students will draw from the well-researched, informational text, "Virus Hunters: How Science Protects People When Outbreaks and Pandemics Strike" by Amy Cherrix.

"Virus Hunters" traces the work of epidemiologists over the pass several centuries--and into our present day--to explain how scientists uses data and community informed problem solving to unravel the mysteries of epidemic illnesses.

Through their study, 6th graders will gain important historical knowledge, engage with ethical choices around scientific field research, and gain key literacy skills, specifically with scientific root words and the organization and presentation of informational texts.
