Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These are unprecedented times. Never did I imagine that when my students and I said goodbye in March it would mean that it was our last day in the classroom. However, the year is not over yet!

My students and I have embarked on the STEAM distance learning journey, they come from low-income families and are limited in the way they are able to learn.

We are actively engaged in all sorts of different online platforms and learning new things. Thankfully, NYC has supplied families with iPads to help students continue their learning. Students have very limited resources in their homes and it makes it challenging to teach science and engineering. I try to use as many materials that I have in my home for the experiments and STEAM\STEM builds, but I too am limited. I purchased some materials but it is getting very expensive.

We were told that we are not able to enter the buildings to retrieve materials for teaching. My students are predominantly English language learners and special needs learners. I would like to create a true virtual classroom for them by videotaping my lessons so that they can return to the lessons as many times.

My Project

My students and I have been learning together using many different platforms like Google classroom, Youtube, Google Meets, Generation Genius, and many more. I have not been able to create the same type of modeling as I do in the classroom because I do not have the tools I need, such as an easel, chart paper, and markers.

I will be using these materials to help create a virtual STEAM classroom to help further stimulate my K,1,2, and 5th-grade science students.

I will be creating online videos of each lesson and using the materials such as the grow house, to show what would normally be a hands-on activity. Many of my students don't speak English and have special learning needs, these visual aids don't replace a good hands-on activity, but it will help them make more sense of what they are learning.

When we return to learning in our school I will be using these materials with all my future classes.
