My Students

My virtual students are craving more stories! Even though we can't meet physically, we meet together in my virtual classroom at least once a week. Their favorite activity is the weekly teacher read aloud. I would love to be able to share the pictures of these fabulous stories with them while I read.

My students are in grades 4 through 7.

I teach all subjects in 4th and 5th grade and science in 6th and 7th grade. We are a small school, which is nice because we get to know each other very well. We are a virtual school, which means that we do not have a physical building. My students work on computer-based lessons from home with parent supervision. As the teacher, I provide the learning activities and assess the learning. I try very hard to find intriguing and creative activities to keep the students interested in their classes! The students' favorite activities are virtual lessons in Blackboard Collaborate (similar to Skype, but for school) and the fabulous field trips we attend. Even though we don't see each other face to face every day, we are a great team! We learn a lot together.

My Project

We will be able to do so much more in our virtual lessons with a document camera! One of the main reasons we need this resource is to share pictures in books that we read together. It will help the students comprehend the story when they can attach the words to pictures. But I'm not the only one who will read! With a document camera I can allow the students to read from the text and assess their reading fluency more easily. This will help me target their reading instruction to help my students become better readers. We will also use the document camera in math and science. It will be much easier to write mathematical equations without having the worry about text formatting. I will also be able to demonstrate mathematical concepts through the use of math manipulatives. In science I will also be able to demonstrate concepts and even do short labs with the students in my virtual classroom.

Because we are a small school, we often miss funding opportunities in our district.

Sometimes we are not given basic supplies because people don't realize that we have a need for them as a virtual school. Books are an important supply in all classrooms. Having a document camera will allow me to share a wide variety of book resources with my students to increase their depth of knowledge and love of reading.
