My Students
Our school is nestled within a rural community full of hardworking families who strive to raise well-rounded students. As a school community, we recognize the need for strong ties to our community because we know that without their support, educating thoughtful, respectful, and innovative students would be a difficult endeavor.
As a "rural-fringe" school, it is highly important to us to continuously challenge and expand all of our students' perceptions of the world and the many cultures that exist so that they are able to understand the different facets of the human condition from a personal, community, and global perspective.
As our school population continues to become more diverse, we continue to place a high degree of emphasis on developing the capabilities to support the needs of all of our students and their families so that engaging, innovative, and relevant learning takes place.
My Project
The "New American" experience is the history of our nation; from Virginia in 1607, Plymouth Rock in 1620, to Ellis Island in 1892, we have been a nation of disparate cultures coalescing to form a mighty and welcoming nation. The "New American" experience joyfully continues to this day and will continue to be an ever present facet of life for students across the world as we become increasingly global. There will always be a need for teachers to nurture tolerance and empathy within all students because the immigrant experience is a unique one that continually offers opportunities for a better life in a new nation.
Imagine being able to visit a refugee camp in Syria, the site of a natural disaster where people have been displaced, or just simply taking a trek through different geographic locations as a means of understanding where people come from and the things that they left behind!
Through HTC Vive's Virtual Reality System and its incredibly robust platform, exploring the immigrant experience will be a powerful one thanks to its immersive nature and this, in turn, will elicit meaningful discussions and personal reflections due to its impact and the unique perspective that it will support on what it means to be from another country. By integrating VR into our classroom, I hope to give all students a voice as well as equitable access to relevant and powerful technology and educational experiences, especially for my ESL/ELL students! Outside of our English Language Arts class, I will have the HTC Vive system available for STEAM exploration as a way to offer further access to powerful technology and learning tools that can help my ESL/ELL students be successful.
Thank you for supporting our classroom and allowing it to continue to transform into a true 21st-century learning space!
