My Students

I have the privilege of teaching a special education classroom in Richmond city. My students range from 2 to 5 years old and their courage and resilience amazes me every single day. Many of my students have severe physical, medical, and developmental needs and are dependent on others for many parts of their daily living. They are extraordinary individuals who have faced so many challenges in their short lives and still come to school with a smile on their face and ready to learn!

My Project

Due to Covid-19, our learning has turned virtual until at least February 2021. This is hard on all students but especially young students with disabilities. These adapted chairs and trays will give my students the space and support they need to learn successfully at home. We will do lots of fun moving and dancing as well but a special and defined space just for them will help provide the support they need for attending while maximizing engagement!

Most of my students are nonverbal and I rely heavily on facial expressions and gestures to check for understanding as we work towards more functional communication methods.

Checking for these nonverbal cues is exceptionally difficult during virtual lessons. An iPad will allow me to present lessons and activities on that screen while still allowing me to view my students faces and check for understanding on my laptop screen. I can also use the iPad as a document camera to allow me to more clearly model and teach virtual lessons to my students. The iPad is a versatile tool that would not only be valuable with virtual learning, but for in person learning when we return as well!

Please help me in creating the best possible virtual learning scenario for my students! It definitely won’t be an easy year but with your support, I can’t wait to get creative and help my little ones become virtual learning rockstars!
