Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle school is a crucial time in which students can start to lose their desire to learn. As learning becomes more work and less fun the attitude of "when am I ever going to use this?" bubbles to the surface. Middle school science is special because we get to keep that aspect of fun a bit longer. My 8th graders range from 12-16 years old depending of course on birthdays and if they've ever had to repeat. We are a low income area and all of our kids receive free breakfast and lunch (free or not; you still can't get them to eat their veggies.) I teach 60 general science students and 60 Biology students (2 advanced classes.)

My Project

Science looks very different in our world, post-Covid. My students are no longer able to use many hands-on materials or work in groups so science laboratory experiments have drastically changed. Many experiments are now video based which many of my students have difficulty connecting to.

I discovered ExploreLearning Gizmos and was blown away by how well they provide my students with a new way to do hands-on labs.

Even though it is a digital program, my students can interact with the Gizmos in ways that help recreate that real-world experience. They aren't just watching a video or clicking a button, they are actually doing a lab.

My students have had an incredibly favorable response to this program but our free trial is running out and as Honors students who need to maintain 1200 lab minutes this year I want to be able to provide them with the resources they love.
