My students are from a large high school where about half of the student population qualify for the Federal Free/Reduced Lunch Program. Many of our students intend to go to college but lack the resources to visit colleges in our region and beyond.
My Project
About four years ago I found cardboard VR players while at a conference. I brought one back to my College and Career Center and kids loved it! It started with watching YouTube videos in VR, but when I started to use them to help students access college campuses, everything changed!
For many students traveling around the country to tour a college campus isn't possible but there are more and more VR college tours out there.
Students would visit my office and take a VR tour of a college every day. Last year I found some Career VR Tours. This expanded the outreach to students who will join the workforce in the growing aerospace manufacturing industry in our state.
This year COVID-19 has many challenges, but two of them are
1. Children can't share materials
2. Some children will be remote 100% of the time
This means that I have to rethink how I give students this great resource and keep them safe. I would like to have 350 VR players that I can give out to our junior class so they can explore colleges and job sites. This will be part of a welcome package I will send out to students to welcome them to the College and Career Center. I'm hopeful that this project will not only give them a great resource but will help build a connection with each Junior to make them feel welcome in the College and Career Center.
