My Students

Our students are in a specialized program for students with severe special needs. All of our students receive special education services, and have an IEP. In addition, all of our students are on the autism spectrum - combining students who are verbal, have some verbal ability, to students who are non-verbal. Our students have used music, and the arts, as a vehicle to learn important life and social skills that they can apply into the real world. The arts have provided them with a well-rounded education, and they have shown a deep interest into music and the arts.

My Project

Our school has begun a brand new string orchestra program, for our students with special needs. Since music has been a vital part of our students' education experience, adding string orchestra will help our students learn about music even more. For our students who participate in our string program, there are lifelong benefits as well. Orchestra will be used to teach: language development, critical thinking, social skills, hand-eye coordination, in addition to making wonderful music. Currently, our students are using broken instruments, and have to share them. This project would greatly benefit our students, in that they would get to use new instruments, and share wonderful music.
