My Students

Do you remember learning about the far off planets and having a hard time envisioning them? To view the planets directly will help my students relate to this experience and to the information they are learning. They will then remember the information longer and may be inspired by the experience.

The students in my classes are amazing students.

Their families have chosen our school over many other schools in the area due to our style of teaching. We are an Expeditionary Learning school with small class sizes and a hands-on project-based approach to teaching. Some of the families have chosen our school because their students are looking for a challenge and we can provide the differentiated instruction to ensure they are being challenged. Other families have chosen our school because of the small class sizes and the hands-on learning that has helped students that may struggle in a more traditional class room setting. During each expedition (semester) the students will grapple with learning material that is useful in their lives and applies to our area. The expedition will culminate with a product that has an authentic audience.

My Project

The telescope we are requesting as a class is computerized and will quickly help my students find the planets that are visible in the sky. With actually seeing the planets the students will have a better connection with the material and remember the information longer. The telescope also has a feature where you can attach a camera to the telescope and preserve the images. These images will be used as they create their informational video for the younger grades to learn from. At the end of the semester we will have many support lessons for the younger grades and often the students will use these photos to enrich these lessons.

Technology and a connection to the subject are so important in reaching all of the students in my class.

To help the middle school students relate to the information and create a true interest in the material you need to provide the personal experiences and the technology "cool" factor. My students feel that this may also give them a perspective on how small we are within the universe.
