I teach 5th and 6th graders who are currently reading three or more years below grade level, and my goal is to accelerate them to grade level so that they can rejoin the regular English class. I am the Reading Specialist at a charter school in the South Bronx for 5th to 8th graders. I am using a remedial reading program called Fast Track. The comprehension component consists of themed magazines. These themes are developmentally appropriate for middle school students, ranging from sports to science to culture. However, I believe that my students would benefit greatly from some more visually based learning about some of the topics. For example, it would be wonderful to kick off the magazine about insects ("Creepers, Crawlers, and Fliers") or the magazine about earthquakes ("Deadly Shakers") with a video that provided them with a knowledge base on which to draw. I am sure that their comprehension would be enriched by building their background knowledge in this way. I would like to have a small library of videos that I could show when appropriate to help the students visualize the topic at hand. From their enthusiastic response and their repeated references to the one video I have been able to show, I know that their understanding of the material they read would be significantly enhanced. Thank you for considering this proposal.
