Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help girls share their math knowledge with other girls who are struggling with the concepts! We are an all-girls public high school in a high-needs inner-city community in New York with the goal of encouraging and preparing students for college. Because of our success in this area, we have an average-smashing 96% graduation rate and 100% college acceptance rate! Most of our girls are the first in their family to go to college. They want to learn and want to excel...they just need the resources to enable their success. This request is for my 9th grade Integrated Algebra class.

Education research has shown that students learn better when they learn from each other, and that they retain more by teaching the concepts to others. Our school focuses on team work and group work environments, where students usually work in groups of 4 students. We currently have no way to capture the work that the groups have done and leverage the learning to other classes.

At the end of a unit, I'd like to have the girls make short video clips teaching the unit concepts that they have learned in their own words. These clips will be stored electronically in a library of tutoring videos so other students can view them and hear the math concepts explained in ways that make sense to them.

Your help will build confidence in my girls that they can excel in math and science, and empower them to have a voice and help each other succeed.
