My Students

In my 6th-grade middle school classroom, many of my students come from backgrounds with limited at-home reading experiences, as well as a wide range of reading levels.

We work hard to build a reading community within the classroom that supports all levels of readers.

That support comes from their desire to become better readers and to trust one another, and from having a classroom library that fits all their different needs.

My Project

As a teacher of middle schoolers, I need to show students the value of reading. Many of my students abandon books and can be intimidated by full-length novels. Because many students lack books at home and lack the motivation to read, I must have the right book for the right reader.

This is why novels in verse are needed in my classroom.

Reading novels in verse is a way for them to explore a new genre, gain confidence, and experience success as readers.

Novels in verse are less intimidating because they have fewer words on a page yet are full of solid characters, fast-paced storylines, and relevant themes.

Novels in verse are also written about deep emotional topics that middle schoolers are experiencing. Students can better understand these emotions while also being successful as readers.

This project will help me to support my readers and to build my reading community...verse by verse!
