Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a 2nd grade special education classroom and we are full of love and charismatic personalities! My students laugh, play, care and give to one another with every moment that they can. They enjoy coming to school and are very enthusiastic to learn and make them a better person each day. However, my students face many adverse circumstances everyday. Most of my students live in shelters, city housing developments, and foster care. Within living in these types of urban communities, most of my children come to school hungry, without proper sized clothing or school supplies. Most of our 2nd graders read, write and compute at a kindergarten level.

My students are still resilient to the adversity that they face every second of their lives.

They come to school with loving arms, and willing to learn something new each day. With all that happens to them emotionally, physically, and socially, my students still want to come to school and make new friends, run around the play ground, be happy and loving.

My students value community, and understand the meaning of working together. They know that working as a team, makes dreams happen and can get you further ahead in life.

My Project

These math activity sets will make a huge difference when our students are practicing their math fact fluency. This will not only help our students' acquire the necessary skills and strategies for math, but this will help alleviate the confusion. This math activity set is very discrete with their directions, and once our scholars learn the routine of using this tool to learn, they will be able to master any skill that is required of them at a second grade level.

Our students with special needs will definitely enjoy learning math in this new and interactive way where it will allow their learning style to flourish and also master the skill being taught.

My scholars love puzzles and always enjoy a challenge. This activity set will help them with that. The way I will implement this activity is to first teach them the math lesson. Then, I will have them practice what was taught in the lesson and basically "play" independently until they solve the puzzle. Lastly, I will go work with other students that need other supports. Additionally, with this activity set, I can meet with more children to meet those students needs too. The fun thing about this math activity is that it is actually fun! I know that our scholars will always look forward to math because they know they will be learning math through play and most importantly, they will forever remember this tool.
