Vermicomposting: Using Worm Compost in Classroom Gardens

Help me give my students worm bins for vermicomposting, worms (because they are the powerhouse!), and a sprayer, all to help build and maintain our classroom gardens where we grow fruits and vegetables for our community garden.

My Project

We've got worms! Actually, we need worms and worm bins!

This project will provide our students with 2 worm bins for vermicomposting, 1000 worms to get our worm bins started, and an industrial sprayer so we can keep our worm bins moist, as well as keep all our fruits, vegetables, and native plants watered.

We are hoping to improve upon our community garden, so that we can have a true community garden, focused on beautifying and feeding the community. In order to do that, we have the beginnings of a classroom garden, which will provide all the plants for our Community Garden in the Springtime.

Our classroom gardens provide the fruits, vegetables, and native plants which will be transplanted into the Community Garden at our High School, however, plants need nutrients! We are working on creating an organic experience in our Community Garden. In order to keep our plants happy and healthy, we need to feed them.

This is where Vermicomposting is going to help keep our classroom garden and plants alive! We will use the worm castings (worm poo, really amazing fertilizer) to feed our plants and keep them healthy for the springtime transplant.

Our desire is to have our Community Garden help support local food needs, and to have a space where we can come together. The resources in this project will ensure that our students have the correct equipment to create a garden based around community involvement. By growing fresh produce locally, our community garden at our High School can help provide nutritious food to those in need, improving food access and health outcomes.
