My Students

Do you know how hard it is to learn to read, when the only books you can read are for infants. Velcro with visually adapted books will help my students understand age appropriate texts and improve their reading skills.

My students come from a tough neighborhood in New York City.

They have various and multiple special needs and have a very difficult time learning basic skills. They struggle every day trying to communicate their wants and needs. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and from my experience, these kids would benefit from having pictures and illustrations that they can manipulate to help them understand the world around them. Having visual symbols in their environment will significantly reduce student frustration, and increase student interest in reading, and increase teachable moments throughout the day. I work closely with the classroom staff but we are in great need of materials to help our students.

My Project

I am requesting hook and loop Velcro dots that will be used to construct book with illustrations and symbols to help students understand the contents of the curriculum. My students will learn to match words to pictures in age appropriate books through their day.

Your donation will make a significant impact in the lives of the students I work with by providing them with something they haven't yet been able to master, but it is their right to be able to access age appropriate reading materials within their school environment.
