My Project

I am a special education teacher. My request for gardening tools is to dig up all the old dead plants in three plots so we can plant fruits and vegetables. The tools like forks and trowels will be used to churn the soil and loosen it up so seeds can be placed in the soil.

Daily, two volunteers will water the plants.

Twice a week, the whole class will attend to the plants, using the forks to dig up weeds. The students will have the pleasure of watching the plants grow. When the vegetables are ready, we will have salads with our lunch.

In the school, I am allotted 3 small plots for my gardening project. The tools will enable all my students to fully participate.

They will learn that plants are living things that require water, nutrients, and sunshine. Twice a week, I will schedule my class to go to the designated area for our gardening.There, they will partake in the entire process from preparing the soil to planting the seeds, watering, and finally harvesting. Then with the harvest, I will prepare a delicious meal.

Through this project, I am hoping they will become life-long healthy eaters and to pass on the knowledge they gained to their family members.

My students come from lower income households and live in small, crowded apartments. They are used to eating fast food with little or no vegetables. The vegetable they are most familiar with are french fries.

Gardening creates an environment that celebrate learning which builds equity. A garden can grow a diversity of plants and fruits. Plants feed one another and feed the soil. The diversity attracts different helpful insects and animals. The healthy ecology reduces pests and disease. Diversity and difference is strength. A garden will teach the students this.
