My students are incredible. Through the pure love of reading, they were able to grow 2.02 years within the one school year we spent together, proving that reading is transformational. They are from a zip code known for having a population that has socioeconomic struggles, violence, and crime. Despite their backgrounds, my students have already overcome many obstacles.
94% of my students are from homes of lower income, and in Nashville, the cost of living is constantly climbing, putting a strain on our families.
In our classroom, we value each others opinions, ideas, and differences. We celebrate each others failures and successes. We empower each other in all that we do. And everything we do comes from a place of love.
Studies show that there is an ever-growing vocabulary gap among children from different socioeconomic groups. "By age 3, it is believed children growing up in poor neighborhoods or from lower income families may hear up to 30 million words than their privileged counterparts." (Psychology Today).
My goal is to give my students every tool they need to be successful.
With a fun and engaging academic vocabulary curriculum, the vocabulary acquisition gap can be closed and students of low socioeconomic status can have the same achievements and opportunities as their counterparts from more affluent families.
Every child in America deserves a world-class education, regardless of their income, and it's our job to give it to them.
