Variety Is The Spice Of Life

Help me give my students the ability to create unique color interpretations. These markers would allow young artists to be able to see how light and color mixing creates a variety of hues from which to choose.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a school where eighty-seven percent of our students receive free lunches. Most students come from single parent, working class, immigrant families, and/or Spanish speaking environments. Opportunities in abundance on the other side of town seem like a fantasy in our classroom. Students aren't vacationing; they read, draw, and imagine to travel. In art class, learners draw those imagined experiences or create from life. Students attempt to understand the world as they practice drawing the world. These creative experiences allow this ATPE art educator to journey with her students as we create time, space, textures color, and learn to value the experiences that we have together every day.

Our school's motto is, "Show up, work hard, read!" It sounds simple; however many of our students don't read in either language when they enter the doors.

Our goal is to give learners real-world tools so that every learner possesses the skills they need to participate in the 21st century. At the same time, I push myself to create opportunities for learners and relish the time we have together. We "show up, think hard, and create magic!"

My Project

Have you ever turned a crayon over and read the name? Do you remember being 10 and opening a new box of art supplies? Although primary and secondary colors are staples in the art classroom to be able to access colors like Ultramarine Blue or Green Gold allow artists to take their visual communications to another realm.

The pandemic has accented the need for equity in the classroom as students are creating from their homes, kitchen tables, and sometimes even closets.

Parents have added seating, lamps, and even tiny chairs in places to allow students independence when in a virtual classroom.

I would love to hand these out in a couple of weeks to some of the older elementary students with a sketchbook that is a gift from another grant here in Austin. My fourth-graders are meeting with a museum three times this year and are currently considering their next project-based lesson considering texture. We are the great explorers in the art room. I can't wait to see what their young imaginations bring to life if allowed this kind of variety of colors. These markers are a visual of variety. Please help me to hand out more colors of the rainbow!
