Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my Humanities class the goal is to create better citizens for our society by exposing them to a variety of experiences that help them learn and grow. This class is part of our school's Global Studies Magnet Program. From art, to music, to architecture, to religion and philosophy to culture students gain new insights and perspectives on a variety of topics. They study cultural enclaves in Miami and their evolution. They study the purpose of buildings and its importance in showing culture. They study mechanisms to preserve culture in our changing world. They look at government's, the private sector's, schools' and families' role in maintain a culture alive and healthy. As part of the course, student are encouraged to work in an interdisciplinary fashion to produce projects based on content presented. I am constantly looking for projects to engage my students. Our school is over 80 percent Hispanic with many of our students recently migrating from Latin and South America. More than 50 percent of our population is in our ESL program. More than 50 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

My Project

About 10 years ago a pond was created, through a science grant, as an experimental classroom, where a living ecosystem could be developed and studied. All plant and animal life would be native to the ecosystem. Over time the pond was also used by Language Arts teachers for inspiration for writing assignments, art classes for inspiration for drawing and photography sessions and by the Hispanic Heritage committee as a living art exhibit, working with the PIAG Museum on their Water and Earth Project. Our work was even featured on Univision as an innovative way to bring learning outside of the classroom. Over time, the wear and tear has caused the lining of the pond to break, causing all the water to seep out of the ponds, causing the plant and animal life to die as well as creating a real eye sore. Also, many of our projects were limited by the fact that there is no lighting system around the pond for night time community events. Another problem is that the pond had no filtration system, so over time the algae accumulation has overcome the native species. In attempt to salvage the pond a group of students tried to remove invasive plants and clear accumulated debris to make it more presentable, but the damage was so severe that it could not be fixed. We are in need of solar powered light for the pond. These same students are excited and interested in restoring and maintaining the pond for future activities and events.
