My Students

John Updike once said, What art offers is space - a certain breathing room for the spirit. I am asking for art supplies my class this year because I believe art teaches calmness and focus.. I think with an art center in my class the students might be more focused to get a reward at the end of the day and create one space for themselves.

My students are amazingly creative and active.

I teach students who are second language learners and some who are in transitional housing. However the majority of my students are very active and strong willed. I have noticed that when I give some a paper, pencil, crayons, markers, and die-cuts, they are as quiet as lambs. I always had an art center in previous years with the most basic supplies, but I realize this year, these students want to go beyond. Beyond the kinder fingerprinting and coloring with crayons. I can think of a few of my students that need the time to explore different materials. They even get excited when I put out leaves to rub, things to trace, and they are even making their own art books with no instruction. I have at least 8 of my students choosing drawing over playing with toys and blocks during my structured play time. However I only have crayons, markers and pencil. So this is why I'm asking for more...

My Project

Being an artist myself, I feel it is my duty to expose children to different art approaches and media. For some reason, my class this year has a real enthusiasm for learning about different art and artists. When I teach them a lesson I have noticed that during their free time, I see them repeating it again on their own to experience it again. This is something that has never happened before in my class and I want to continue to cultivate their interest using different materials. I feel art is the time when they get to focus and calm down-which can be a valuable learning experience where they get to explore and create. I feel like I could really be creating future artists. The minute the students, who are so active during the day and can't get their energy out, sit down to draw all that energy is channeled into creativity and it is amazing to watch. My students will inevitably learn how to use different materials and create art and their parents will be blown away by.

Your help giving these high energy students a creative outlet will change their perspective, channel their thoughts into constructive creative works of art, will enable these students to see beyond a crayon, a pencil, and use oil pastels, charcoal and paint in unique ways with my instruction.
