This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Using the arts to inspire students to read and write is my passion. I believe that reading and writing is something that can be taught by employing the use of art materials, and a reliable digital camera to enhance, document and create real experiences for the students.

Our school is one of the largest elementary schools in the city of Chicago.

With a population of over 1800 students in grades k-8, we are happy to boast about the fact the we have an attendance rate of over 95%. Yes, our students enjoy coming to school. Our school is designated as a Fine Arts neighborhood school with an open enrollment. In the wake of continued diminishing funds for public education, teachers like myself, are often faced with the reality of having to reach into own their own pockets in order to provide the resources needed to make learning fun and exciting.

My Project

The resources provided to my classroom will allow me to give my students exposure to fun and exciting activities related to creative writing. Here is a sampling of some of the activities I planned for the resource I requested: take photo of plant growth; illustrate stories or poems; ideas for illustrating emotions; photos to prompt creative writing; take photos of learning centers for a choice; take photos to prompt creative writing; use photos of family to create a family book; use photos for sequencing; photos for passports during a travel unit; take photos for a rhyming book; use photos in hand-made cards or parents; photos of events and make a calendar of memories and of classroom events for student journalism. Finally, we use all these materials to, write about and take photos of Act of Kindness, Caught being good, Great reader character day, etc.

Each and every child has some artistic abilities.

In some these grow extensively and in others it needs to be continuous nourished. The primary use for the resources I requested will be to inspire kids to read and write by employing the use of the arts. My goal is to make learning a fun and effortless process for my students. The broad impact of this project is to have my student leave my classroom with a general understanding of: generating ideas and getting them down on paper.
