Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Practice makes perfect! A typical day in my classroom involves a lot of translating. When you walk in, it sounds like bees buzzing. This "noise" is learning taking place. It is the sound of active minds making connections. Our classroom is a judgment free zone where we all help each other.

My students are all Title 1 students.

The majority of my students are English language learners (ELL). Their first language is Spanish. This is the first year where most of them do not have a bilingual teacher. They are working hard to master their second language and need resources to aid their journey. They come to class every day ready to work. I want them to understand that learning at times involves struggle. Most of them will be the only truly bilingual person in their families. My school is encountering a new situation with so many ELL students. We are on a new road, but we are trying all that we can to make it smooth for our students. Our students and our community know that we are doing all that we can to help our students not just learn English, but to master all of the literacy components. Failure is not an option. WE are ALL in the pursuit of EXCELLENCE! They know that we will do anything necessary to get them access to resources and materials.

My Project

Our district has purchased an English language acquisition program in which all of our English language learners have an account. All the students need is access to the internet and some form of technology. Most of our students do not have the materials necessary. I would like to give them access in my classroom. I want to use the requested tablets and earphones to allow my students to have access to the above mentioned program. My students will be able to access the technology during class but also during off periods. The program will allow them to start at the appropriate English level and then progress at their own pace. The program is very individualized. It eliminates the one size fits all model. I can also track them to see where I need to do differentiated instruction. The program, called ESL Reading Smart, is "kid friendly" and the students always seem to enjoy it more than just simply being "talked at" by a teacher. It is fun and non-threatening.

This project will improve my students' lives by giving them access to technology and to a program that will enable them to close the learning gap between them and native English speakers.

My students are very intelligent, but right now, they have a language barrier. This is one barrier that we can knock down to help them feel successful. It can give them hope that they can succeed and level the educational field when it come to high stakes testing.
