Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Mathematics, English Language Arts and Social Studies to a self-contained class of seventh grade students with special needs. There are currently seven students in my class. However, I expect more students to be placed in my class throughout the year with newly registered students and transfer students. There may be up to twelve students. My students' reading levels range from first grade to sixth grade. I was trained in a reading program which requires a computer for part of its instructional model. The other parts are whole-group direct instruction, small-group direct instruction, modeled and independent reading and whole-group wrap-up. My school has laptop computers that teachers can book for the morning or afternoon. To successfully implement this reading program however, I need a personal computer because assessment data is kept on each student. The software tracks each student's progress and provides them with individualized skills practice. The laptops can be used by every classroom in the school and I would not be able to save the data on any laptop. With a personal computer I would also not have to worry about any scheduling conflicts that may arise when I try to book a laptop. Finally, although I would primarily use the personal computer for the reading program, it would also be a great asset for other subjects. Therefore, the personal computer could help to impact the students in all of their subjects. This would be a great first step for my students who need to learn to read so that they can read to learn!
