Help Mrs. Dye

My Students

Unfortunately, my students think science texts are boring and dry. I want to change their perception by introducing them to high quality science books that are not only scientifically factual, but also contain striking pictures and illustrations.

My students are enthusiastic fourth and fifth graders in a highly capable program.

I teach both math and science to both classes and this year I will be adding reading informational text to my curriculum. My students are above grade level readers but read primarily fantasy fiction. It's a real challenge to get them interested in other genres like informational text.

My Project

After extensive research, I compiled a list of recommended books I thought would not only engage my students, but was also appropriate for their age and intellect. The books cover a wide range of science topics that support my present curriculum as well as different types of informational text. For example we will be studying birds this year so I selected both "Dark Emperor and Poems of the Night" (poetry) and "Raptor! Kid's Guide to Birds of Prey" (informational guide). I believe this variety will appeal to different students. After lessons on reading strategies for informational text, students will have an opportunity to apply those strategies using self-selected science books. This collection will be both the books requested along with others I've accumulated over the years.

With your help, my students will not only learn about how to read informational text, but will also greatly expand their science knowledge base through outstanding, engaging science books.
