My Students

According to the National Math and Science Initiative, the U.S. needs 1,000,000 more STEM professionals over the next decade than it is projected to produce at the current rate. My goal is to help expose my students to all areas of STEM in order to pique their interest in a growing field.

My students are coming into classrooms with a natural interest and curiosity in technology.

As a teacher, I want to take that natural interest and motivation and use it challenge my students in as many ways that I can to help them learn and explore the world around them and to prepare them to be successful for the world ahead in their future. Fifteen of the twenty fastest growing careers all require a background in math or science according to the NSMI. By providing these materials for our class, every year a new group of students will be exposed to a field of science they might never explore otherwise and help them to realize not only might they like some of those 15 jobs, but that they are also already really good some of those jobs. Providing robotic kits will expose students to problem solving, teamwork, and challenge them to think creatively. Students will use all parts of a STEM classroom to gain the confidence they need to continue on a path in 21st century careers.

My Project

The materials (Mindstorm Core Set and Expansion Set) provided in this project will allow me to completely revamp my robotics clubs. The new solar powered robotic kits will put supplies in front of each small group allowing the entire class to engage in designing and building at once. This will help increase the excitement for groups as they will have more time, freedom, and hands on exposure to explore possibilities. Additionally, the solar powered kits will let us study renewable resources and how energy from the sun is transferred into energy on Earth. These kits can serve as beginner kits for those that are not quite ready for our larger projects helping them to feel more comfortable and confidant working with robotics and programming even if they have never been exposed to this type of content before. The new EV3 kit and expansion pack will almost triple the amount of materials that we currently have which will again get more students involved at one time.

Every day I am faced with the challenge of showing my students that science and math classes can not only apply to their lives, but that they can also be fun.

Providing these materials will help keep them excited about STEM topics such as robotics, coding, and renewable energy but will challenge them in a relevant and authentic way to grow as an individual as they problem solve, work together, and think creatively.
