Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The 42 energetic kindergartners at our school fill two kinder classes! They come from a variety of socioeconomic, racial, and educational backgrounds. Some are new to school, and some on their third year in our school.

Nearly half of our students speak English at home, another half speak Spanish at home, and all are bilingual learners.

Over two-thirds of the students at our school are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, and we are a Title I school based on students' language development needs. Our kindergartners love animals, outdoor exploration, and building!

Students' linguistic, academic, and social skills thrive with play. They enjoy hands-on group play inside and chatting with friends about their creations made of Play-Doh and Magna-Tiles. They are mastering engineering and science skills as they make plans, test their designs, analyze what works and doesn't, and try again. Students build confidence, perseverance, and cooperation skills as they construct and play together. And they love it!

My Project

The board games will be a major addition to growing our bilingual classroom by encouraging development of language and social skills. As a student asks for the fishing pole in Let's Go Fishing or expresses excitement of landing on a ladder in Chutes and Ladders, he or she will build a more expansive vocabulary as well as learn to respond back-and-forth with their peers.

Important social interactive skills like turn-taking, coping with losing, and being humble will all grow as my students play board games with their peers.

Additionally, similar skills will grow as students build tracks with their new train set and engineer building brick structures with small groups. Extra challenges of quantities, colors, and structure design will add further rigor for students ready for more challenge in their engineering.
