My Students

When was the first time you were bullied or saw someone bullied? Bullying is a major issue in all grades and among students with and without disabilities.

My students are very inspiring.

They are all students with disabilities. Our school is a large educational community that strives to create the most memorable high school experience possible for our students. We have the same events that are found in "typical" high schools such as prom, dances, and senior trips. As a speech teacher, I work with many of the students in the building. Even though my students are disabled, they encounter the same problems as their "typical" counterparts. Bullying is one of the biggest issues in our school. However because of the cognitive disabilities as well as the limited speech capabilities, it is very difficult to teach students the appropriate way to deal with bullying.

My Project

As a speech teacher I have a unique opportunity to group students together that may not interact with one another if they had a choice to. This allows me to foster interaction between the students. When appropriately engaged students can learn to work together and not against each other. I am requesting 2 Shapes Discovery boxes and 2 Peg Number Boards. These materials will be used with students that have limited cognitive abilities. These resources will be used to encourage interaction and speech between students especially when they are frustrated. This speech will focus on "getting along" with one another and not bullying each other. The materials that I am requesting will serve a secondary purpose as well. In the speech classroom I focus on various parts for the students curriculum, including math and science. I will use the resources to build the students math skills. There is a major push to develop STEM curriculum across the board. Even in the speech room our students can work on their shape and number skill.

Whether you are a freshman in a typical high school or a child with down syndrome in a special education school, bullying is a issue that prevalent at your school.

The bottom line is, it is up to teachers like me to educate the students in a variety of ways to combat bullying.
