My Students

The students at my school live in a high need area, where every student qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. They face many struggles both inside and outside of the classroom, yet they are resilient and eager to learn.

As an occupational therapist, I service students with special needs ranging from autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, dysgraphia, and learning disabilities.

My goal is to provide students with the resources they need to enhance their participation and independence throughout the school environment. I provide direct, individualized intervention to students, as well as work collaboratively with teachers to support their students in the classroom.

My Project

With each year that passes, our world becomes more rooted in the use of technology. However, the use of iPad apps alone does not provide hands-on learning that research proves benefits student learning. The Osmo Learning System bridges the gab between tabletop manipulatives and iPad apps to help students reach their full potential.

This learning system has various games that align with the curriculum but incorporate technology to keep students engaged and motivated.

For example, in the Numbers game students arrange physical tiles, including dots and digits, to make numbers and complete levels. They can add by putting more tiles, subtract by removing tiles and multiply by connecting tiles together. Experimenting becomes fast and intuitive. In the Words game, students use letter tiles to spell words. Each letter you get right appears on screen, until eventually the entire word is revealed.

As an occupational therapist, I work with special education students in small groups and can incorporate these activities into individualized sessions to best support each student's needs.
