My Students

These 23 eight and nine year olds are learning to express themselves as readers, mathematicians, scientists, writers, friends, peers, and budding community activists.

They see the world around them and are trying to make meaning of what they see, hear and experience.

Every experience adds to the perspectives they have of their community, country and world. They are learning to dig deeper and search for connections in their learning. These 23 students are ready to develop these connections and stretch their understanding of the world in which they will need to survive.

My Project

We will be focusing on the Next Generation Science Standards' cross-cutting concepts of patterns and structure and function while using the practice of using models to develop our scientific understanding. Students will "Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles but all have in common birth, growth, reproduction, and death." 3-LS1-1

By creating models, students will strengthen their understanding of how patterns and structure and function are present in science, and how the models help develop their thinking.

After reading the story The Noteable Notebooks, we will discuss how and why mathematicians, engineers, scientists and others use models to explain and further understand concepts and ideas. Then we will create our own notebooks using graph, lined and regular white paper.

The class set of loupes will be introduced and used as we go out into our school garden and grounds to make careful drawings of plants, and animal life. We will ask "Why?" when we see a pattern or a system and draw detailed pictures in our notebooks using the loupes.

As a group, we will create expectations for our notebook entries. The loupes on lanyards will then go home for the students to use with their notebooks. Students will be drawing, writing and using their loupes to closely examine plant and animal life in their homes, yards, and neighborhoods. Notebooks will return to school 2-3 times a month to share. Then, working with their science teams, they will refine their models. Students will develop a question for their work and be expected to participate in argumentation of their findings and models.

At the end of the project, students will be encouraged to keep using the loupes and making models at home. These tools will strengthen their natural curiosities and their understandings about the world around them.
