This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a low social and economic area. Many of my students have been in foster care. They are terrific kids that just need some individual attention. I try every year as an educator to treat my students as individuals. They need praise and a way to feel good about themselves. I enjoy rewarding them for making positive choices, as well as teaching them how to make those choices. They come from areas where crime is great and death is common. I want them to feel that they can achieve anything with hard work, respect for themselves and others.

My Project

Often our students want to know why we are learning the math concepts they are being taught. The best way for them to learn is to relate the math to real life and discussing money always gets our kids interested.

We constantly discuss that out in the world today, if you cannot figure out the cost of something, " someone will try to rip you off." We work hard for our money and items are expensive, so getting "the best deal" is very important.

Students will be given a fixed amount of money and will shop online. We will choose items of interest and look for the best deal. This includes sale items (percentages off), tax, shipping, buying in bulk, and unit rate. I believe this project will make students want to learn about how to get the best from a dollar.
